No other book has done to me what 2666 did. Since Bolaño's mind tends to work most powerfully in self-contained bursts (anecdotes, images, monologues) rather than in narrative continuity, skipping around is far less of a ño-ño than it would be in a traditional novel. The bookmark that I use in my copy of 2666 is the Christmas card that my brother wrote to me when he gave me the book. In the first section of Bolano's 2666, the academics have Archembolo's books in common. But I know exactly when I read the first page of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. In the second section of 2666, Bolano moves away from the “academic novel” of the critics (and reality as we know it) and delves into the polarities of the known and the unknown, truth vs. Now that I have that distance, no tangible perspective has come other than this: nothing else I've read since has been 2666. Bolaño's final novel, 2666, represents a sort of apotheosis of that dread. It is clear that Bolaño's oeuvre builds towards 2666 and finds its fullest expression in it. That is the basis for their connection. Unlike our editor, Ligaya Mishan, I have yet to finish “2666” and probably won't before the month's end.
